Yes, it has been extended several times. Originally set for April 2020, it moved to October 2023, then June 2024, and now to September 2024.

Why Do PCI 3.x EFTPOS Terminals Need To Be Upgraded?

Outdated terminals are vulnerable to modern security threats, risking payment data breaches. The PCI Security Standards Council sets international standards enforced by Payments NZ to phase out old devices and software.
