Payments NZ sets device sunset dates to make sure all EFTPOS terminals use secure, up-to-date tech.

PCI 4.x EFTPOS devices have been flagged for:

  • Weaker PIN protection
  • Limited firmware updates
  • Higher risk of data theft
  • Less secure authentication

Newer EFTPOS devices are built to fix these issues and better protect your customers’ card data.

What happens if my terminal isn’t upgraded by 30 April 2026?

From 30 April 2026, EFTPOS terminals running on PCI 4.X will be disconnected from the network. Payments NZ has confirmed there are no extensions. To keep taking payments, every business needs to make sure their terminal is compliant before this date.

What costs can I expect?

We'll waive your first 24 months rental fees. A monthly charge to connect to the Verifone Network of $15.00 + GST per terminal, per month still applies. Monthly credit & contactless debit card processing fees charged by your bank may apply.

What happens after the free 24 months?

A monthly service fee to lease your terminal will apply.

What if I have a cancellation fee with my current provider?

We’ll review your current agreement with you. In many cases, we can help you avoid or reduce unnecessary cancellation fees, so you don’t end up paying to leave.

How do I integrate my terminal with my POS?

This promotion is only available to new Eftpos New Zealand customers signing into an Eftpos New Zealand contract and associated terms by 30 April 2026. To be eligible, you must have a BNZ EFTPOS merchant facility, or BNZ online merchant facility, and BNZ's merchant service fees, charges and terms and conditions will apply. A minimum 25-month term for Verifone Online Payments services and a minimum 36-month term for EFTPOS terminal rentals applies. You may cancel your Verifone Online Payments facility at any time by providing 30 days written notice. Additional fees will apply, including Merchant Service Fees for credit card processing. Your monthly subscription fees will be detailed in your Letter of Offer. All Eftpos New Zealand customers are subject to the terms of the Eftpos New Zealand Services Agreement.
